Underground Music Showcase-A recap

I spent 4 hours Saturday night at Gary Lee's Motor Pub and Grub listening to some great music. I was a volunteer for the Underground Music Showcase. Denver (and the state of Colorado) has a truly amazing music scene. You always hear about East Coast vs. West Coast and the occasional band from Chicago, but it's not as common to hear about music coming out of Colorado. Three groups really stood out. The first group is the Kentucky Street Parlour Pickers, a raucous, amazing, energetic band playing amped up bluegrass/rockabilly music. I LOVED this group. They engaged the crowd, people danced, shouted, and responded to the band. They needed a bigger venue. This group genuinely enjoyed what they were doing, so did we. So "Shake your molasses" and check them out! The Parlor Pickers. The next band is one of my favorite Colorado groups, Air Dubai. It doesn't hurt that one of the singers looks like a young Tyson Beckford. Yes, he really does. They are super talented, give a performance that doesn't quit, and are well on their way to becoming really famous. I can't get enough of this band. They announced last night that they will be releasing a new ep/cd sometime this fall. Air Dubai Check out the song "Summer Solstice". Finally, in the interest of full disclosure I do know the drummer in the next band, "Red Fox Run"  but, I hadn't really heard the band's music so I wasn't really sure what to expect. They are GREAT! Hopefully they will be moved to Gary Lee's or the Irish Pub next year. Their music reminded me of serious rock with a splash of Californian angst. I felt like several of the songs should be in a sci-fi summer blockbuster movie with a handsome hero wearing aviators with his hair being gently blown by the air just as he was about to battle some serious aliens. Ironically, a guy wearing a Battlestar Galactica shirt bought one of their cds while I was sitting at the table, thus validating my idea! Red Fox Run. Great music.
