View of the city
I just returned from a trip to Miami, specifically South Beach. It was my first time to Florida and I wasn't really sure what to expect. Maybe it would be a little more diverse than California?? I had people joking that Miami wasn't America, you need to know Spanish to really have a good time there, it's super fun, and the people were a fabulous mix of everything. Well everything you heard is true. I arrived innocently enough, a bit tired from the flights and ready to check in at my hotel. I had paid for everything upfront-which I HIGHLY recommend. Unfortunately, if there is a way to gouge the prices (like any touristy place) it will happen. So, my Super Shuttle (roundtrip) was set from and to the airport was set, the hotel was paid in full (hotels.com) and my Starbuck's card was reloaded prior to arrival. I only had to worry about tipping everyone which made things easier on me. I would also recommend carrying more than your usual amount of cash-and not being obvious about it. I have to admit, I didn't like where the ATMs were situated and found it difficult to find bank locations with atms inside the bank (always smart to withdraw money with a guard around!)
What surprised me:
1.) Miami Beach/Miami feels exactly like South America. Period. Have been to South America so I feel comfortable making the comparison.
2.) Thank goodness I knew spanish. I don't speak it perfectly, but, it ended up being a skill set that made my daily interactions a lot easier.
3.) I saw a Maserati parked on the side of the road-REALLY? What about the parking garage???
4.) The transit services are reasonable, however, it's clear that it is not a priority. No bus schedules in the bus shelters! Come on people.
5.) It was A LOT hotter than I expected for March
6.) Clothing seemed to be somewhat optional, after my initial shock I realized it's freakin' hot no wonder people aren't wearing any clothes!
7.) The class divide.....deserves a whole blog....
8.) The amazing energy
9.) Miami's geography includes islands, forgive my ignorance! It's the same as people thinking that Denver is in the mountains..You get my point
10.) The city is actually quite beautiful. Can't wait to go back!!
